This house represents the typical American Dream House found
in many rural areas of the United States in the 1920’s and
was probably priced around $5,000. It is a renovated three-story Victorian-style home, complete with an elevator,
antique furniture, recreation room, etc. All material used
in the construction in this home are typical domestic
products and are commonly found around the house and our
environment. The House of Democracy took a total of 22
months, the equivalent of 5,800 man hours to create. The
following list has some of the highlights of construction:
1. The fountain which is situated on the front lawn
actually works and is made from two plastic orange juice
bottles and the cork from an Andre Champagne bottle.
2. The street light covers were fashioned from a
toothbrush casing.
3. The public street bordering the front of the house is
called “Freedom Street” and the two side streets are “Peace
Avenue” and “Faith Avenue.”
4. The map of the United States is embedded in the front
yard. This was accomplished by utilizing over 5,000 small white
stones.
5. A piece of broom handle was hand-carved to create the
fire hydrant; the mail box was hand-crafted from a piece of
Douglas Fir.
6. The swimming pool was made from the bottom half of a
plastic trash container.
7. The inside of the house is completely lighted,
including flood lights surrounding the entire estate were made
from cabinet knobs.
8. The house also has fully-functional swimming pool and
Jacuzzi.
9. The back rest of the bar stools are from the side vents
of welders' goggles.
10. The exercise weights are made from jacket buttons.
11. In the interior of the house could be found the smallest
drawings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Presidents of the United
States John F. Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln and President Anwar
Sadat of Egypt. These men gave the ultimate sacrifice for
democracy; their very lives.
